Presenting Charlie Brear’s #FridayBridE josie
This week we are celebrating the 100th Charlie Brear Friday Bride in a special way with the wedding of our good friend, Josie! After a perfect proposal in a picturesque London park, Josie and Ryan tied the knot with a relaxed summer wedding in the English countryside. Josie fell in love with the textured fabric of the Lyra skirt, which she paired beautifully with the Hope Field dress. The wedding included many traditional and personal touches that culminated in the perfect day. Read on for some of Josie’s #bridalhacks and gorgeous photos.
Please describe the style of your wedding
Relaxed, English countryside, summer (!!) barn wedding
When and where did your partner propose to you?
Ryan proposed to me in April 2016 at Kenwood House in Hampstead Heath. At the time we lived in North London and spent many weekends walking around the Heath, it has lots of special memories for us and will continue to do so now. The proposal was exactly what I wanted, laidback, no-one around AND a complete surprise, which believe me is very hard to get past me!!
Which dress did you choose and why? And where did you buy it from?
I wore the Hope field with a bespoke silk spot chiffon skirt, purchased from the Charlie Brear Studio in London. I fell in love with the spotty fabric which was used for a couple of other dresses in the London Collection, so it was a dream come true to have a skirt made in this fabric to go over my dress. I was so happy with the choice of dress; it was so floaty, fun and comfortable to wear.
How was your experience shopping for your wedding dress? (was it easy, was it memorable, was it fun?, was the decision tough?)
Dress shopping felt quite daunting at first, but I was very excited to start trying things on. I spent a lot of time researching on pintrest first and quickly found a style of dress I loved but this completely changed once I started trying on dresses! I loved the Charlie Brear dresses and picked out the Hope field as a favourite before I worked for the company, it was fate once I got the job and it had to be that dress! The girls in the showroom were amazing at advising on which styling additions, accessories and veils to go for!
What would your advice be to other brides shopping for a wedding dress?
Try on lots of different styles, it’s so cliché but you really will surprise yourself with what styles suit you. Feeling comfortable on the day is so important, and make sure that the dress shows off your personality. Don’t be scared to make a statement or try something different!
How did you feel after you had ordered your dress?
Excited!! I couldn’t wait to wear it!
What shoes did you wear?
I wore some pink velvet peep toe sandals from ASOS. They were really comfortable and most importantly affordable!!
Did you struggle finding the right lingerie that worked with your dress, if so would you recommend anything for future brides?
No, not at all, in alterations I got cups sewn into my dress. The dress was completely backless so this was the easiest option. It meant I didn’t have to worry about anything on the day!
Who did your hair & make-up and how did you find them?
Ryan’s Auntie, Marie, really kindly did my hair and make up for the day. She owns her own beauty salon and did such an amazing job. It was really nice to have someone I knew; it made me feel so much more relaxed!
Where and when did you get married?
Cissbury Barns, West Sussex on 29th July 2017
How did you feel walking down the aisle?
Surprisingly calm but emotional!! Ryan is known for being a bit of a crier!! I knew as soon as I saw him look tearful it would make me cry! We had a friend play acoustic guitar which made it even more special.
What traditions did you follow? (Think something old, new, borrowed and blue.)
Without realising, we followed quite a few traditions, but we didn’t follow them because we felt like we had to. My something blue and old was a garter my mum made for me, I borrowed a gold and amber bracelet from my mum and my new was of course my dress! We didn’t see each other the night before, my dad walked me down the aisle and we had the traditional speeches after the meal.
Did your wedding have any quirky or unusual features?
Not particularly quirky, however everything we did was done in our way.
What was the funniest moment of the day?
We had so much fun the whole day but I would probably say the speeches! They were such a good mix of funny and emotional! That and the cake nearly toppling over mid meal!
Who took your wedding pictures?
The Amazing Kate Borrill, I knew her from a previous job I did and she takes the most beautiful photos. She makes you feel so relaxed on the day.
If you could do it all again, would you do anything differently?
Honestly, I don’t think I would change anything (apart from maybe the weather!) We had the best day; we both had so much fun!
Did you find organising your wedding an easy process? What parts were easy and what parts were trickier?
I did mostly enjoy the planning process, but it is also very easy to get caught up in everything and get obsessed with little details! I am a perfectionist and wanted to do lots of the creative parts myself, so I gave myself a lot to do, which can be stressful at times!
My favourite part was making all the stationary, which I did myself. Also the food tasting was obviously very enjoyable!
I found the last month the trickiest, making sure everything and everyone knew when and where they should be!
What will you do with your dress now?
I will definitely keep it, as it has so many memories. I have joked with my other friends who got married this year that we will have an evening where we can try on our dresses again, sit on the sofa and watch lms!!
What are you and your husband's best memories of the day?
Dancing and singing along to the songs of the night with all our friends and family - Our band’s final song was The Killers - Mr Brightside and then You got the Love - Florence and the Machine.
The speeches – a great mix of funny and emotional.
TAKE 5 WITH THIS WEEK’S #FRIDAYBRIDE
Please list 5 great pieces of advice you would pass on to other brides to be
Don’t get caught up in what other people are planning/doing on their day, concentrate on what you want!
There are no rules! Don’t be afraid to be different – so many people are put off by things as they don’t think they are right for a wedding.
Take a moment on the day with your husband to take in everything around you
Delegation!! You cannot do everything!
Have fun! No matter what happens on the day, let it go and just enjoy every moment.
